BREAKING NEWS ALERT – Syracuse students are all about the the Big Heads this season….Our friends over at The Saltine Warriors were brainstorming and came up with the Juli Big Head Campaign! Seems like a great idea!
Who’s going to make one? Do we think Jimmy’s going to enjoy seeing the undergrads hands all over his wife?

Peggy Tatum e-mailed me this letter today. I don’t know her. We’ve never corresponded before. But I thought the letter was powerfully written. So I’m sharing it with you (with Peggy’s permission).
Sometimes we “know” things about life’s meaning in ways both big and small. Here is a small way I know the Supreme Being is orange. In October I bought a Georgetown ticket for my daughter up in 308. As fate would have it, we now have other seats, and therefore my 308 ticket needed to find a fan. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find a buyer. I emailed every person in my office, with no luck. Orange forums – zip. Monday night I was resigned that the ticket was going to waste. How, HOW could a Georgetown ticket not find a home with a devoted SU fan? It made no sense.
Then, at 6:10 p.m. I got a call from a colleague. “M” had been standing in the supermarket check out line, and overheard the woman in front of her lament to the cashier that she desperately wanted to attend the Georgetown game, but didn’t have a ticket. “I guess I’ll just have to go up the hill and take my luck with the scalpers.” “M” tapped the lady on the shoulder, and said, “I know someone with a ticket!” Thirty minutes later that fan and I were embracing in front of Gate N. “I knew someone would love this ticket!” I said. “I can’t believe I found it!” she replied. A coincidence? All throughout that game, I would look up at 308 – and smile.
Here’s a big way I know the Supreme Being is orange. My mother died October 9 of congestive heart failure. For 16 months prior to her death, I flew to Wisconsin once a month to help take care of her. During the 2008-09 basketball season, I planned my week-long visits in between home games. It seemed so cold, so calculating – but.. but.. I had season tickets! One time I broke down and confessed my scheduling secret to mom. “Why, that’s perfectly normal,” she said. “I would do the same. As long as I get to see you, why should I care?” Mom was a Packer fan.
After she died, I faced another basketball season without worry and care, but with profound sadness. And then a little miracle happened. I had the opportunity to purchase center court side seats, just for this season. They were expensive. I ulcerated – for about an hour. Then I bought them. And the games began. And we began to win. And win. And win. “What are the chances,” I often wondered, “that I would just “happen” to get these incredible seats, this year of all years, during one of the most incredible seasons I have ever witnessed?” A coincidence?
Last night at the Georgetown game, I saw Andy steal, A.O. and Rick labor and score, Wes jump over the moon, Triche swish, Scoop scoooop, and Kris just be adorably scary. The Dome was thunderous, and I had some of the best seats in the house. At one point, I sent a thought up into the cosmos: “Mom, are you watching THIS?”
Do I really believe the Supreme Being is orange? Yes. But I believe “he” is also gray Hoya, red Storm, green Spartan and even, yes, even blue Devil. I intend to appreciate the hell out of every moment of this season, whatever happens, because this year is not a coincidence, and I zealously believe in this team. Go Orange!
What a wonderful feeling to stroll through the streets of Georgetown this morning rocking a bright Orange Syracuse scarf. The looks I got were classic!
Hopefully, the Orange will come down to DC and really put it to JT III and his over-ranked Hoyas one more time.
There are a ton of difficult matchups this weekend and the Orange have a legitimate chance to move up a few spots in the rankings. Will there be a #1 next to Syracuse University when the polls come out Monday?!
Here are my predictions…Do you agree?
#1 Texas (17-1, 3-1 Big 12) vs #21 Connecticut (12-6, 3-3 Big East) *CBS* 4:00 PM – One thing we do know is that Calhoun won’t be on the sidelines. They’re coming off an emotional win at home on Wednesday night. Will they be able to match up against a physical Texas team that already has one loss on the road this week? UCONN Wins.
#3 Kansas (17-1, 3-0 Big 12) vs Iowa St (12-6, 1-2 Big 12) *ESPN* 2:00 PM – It would be a different story if Iowa State still had Wes Johnson. Kansas wins.
#4 Villanova (17-1, 6-0 Big East) vs St. John’s (12-6, 2-4 Big East) *ESPN* 12:00 PM – I feel like Scotty Reynolds has been playing for Nova since the early 90’s. Villanova has way too much firepower. NOVA wins.
Marquette (11-7, 2-4 Big East) vs #5 Syracuse (18-1, 5-1 Big East) *ESPNU* 2:00 PM – It’s always great coming home to the Dome after winning 3 on the road. Wes Johnson and Andy Rautins light it up in front of a huge crowd this Saturday. CUSE wins.
#6 Duke (15-3, 3-2 ACC) vs #16 Clemson (15-4, 3-2 ACC) *ESPN* 9:00 PM – I don’t like Duke. I don’t like UNC. Clemson wins.
#7 Michigan St (16-3, 6-0 Big Ten) vs Minnesota (12-6, 3-3 Big Ten) *CBS* 12:00 PM – Michigan St has a perfect record in conference play this season. MSU win
#25 Ohio St (14-5, 4-3 Big Ten) vs #12 West Virginia (14-3, 4-2 Big East) *CBS* 2:00 PM – Big East continues to dominate outside the conference. WVU needs this win like Bobby Huggins needs his scotch. WVU wins.
Michigan (10-8, 3-3 Big Ten) vs #15 Purdue (15-3, 3-3 Big Ten) *ESPN* 4:00 PM – Purdue has to be the most overrated team in the country. Michigan wins.
The only difference is the last time was March ‘09 at Manley Field House when Triche’s high school alma mater, Jamesville-DeWitt, claimed its second straight Section III, Class A Championship over (Utica) Notre Dame! Triche scored 22 points in that game – what are the chances we’ll see that again tonight!?
An excerpt from a pre-season article by Zach Smart who’s written for Big East Basketball Report, Hoops Addict and The East Coast Bias….”Jim Boeheim snared one of the nation’s highly sought after items on the recruiting market by penning local product Brandon Triche. Triche starred at Jamesville-Dewitt HS, Rautin’s alma mater. Accustomed to a high-octane style, Triche was the Class A Co-New York State Player of the Year. Triche is a bulky 6-4 guard who operates offense like the rest of us wake up in the morning. He’s a major steal for the Orange, as national media outlets did not equate him with the star power of other blue chips.
Expect Triche to get meaningful tick his freshman year. He could potentially float up as one of the elite rookies in the Big East ocean. The gem of Jim Boeheim’s 2009 recruiting class, Triche has the Hall of Fame coach ultra confident in putting the rock in his hands from the get-go. Don’t sleep.”
Brandon Triche lead The Orange in scoring today as Syracuse pulled out the win in Morgantown 72-71. Once again SU played a lackluster first half, and followed it up with a much better second half. Johnson was suffering from flu like symptoms and put up only 13 points and pulled down only 5 boards. Rautins fouled out for the first time this season, as a number of players got in foul trouble today. Triche impressed in the second half and was the reason the Orange won today. Onuaku was less than impressive today and seemed like he was dragging most of the game. Syracuse blew a double digit lead in the second half, and let the Mountaineers back into the game. Overtime looked like a good possibility but Syracuse was able to hold on after a few lead changes and get the W. A win is a win is a win and I’m glad Syracuse got the win today.
The Orange take on the unranked Irish in Southbend on Monday at 7.
Breaking news from the Post Standard. At least nobody was injured during the break-in. A little strange that a picture of his 1 year old daughter was removed from the home….Baby mama?
Syracuse University basketball player Mookie Jones’ apartment burglarized while he plays at Rutgers By Robert A. Baker / The Post-Standard
January 14, 2010, 9:26AM
Syracuse, NY — Syracuse University basketball player Theodore “Mookie” Jones’ apartment was burglarized while he was at Rutgers University, where he played a season-high 22 minutes and scored 11 points Wednesday night.
Hours before the game, a friend called to tell him of the break-in at his on-campus apartment. A picture of his 1-year-old daughter was removed from a wall and taken, along with a television, video game player and video games, police said.
Jones, 19, met with police at 1 a.m. today, after he returned with the team from the game, police records state. Jones told police he was unable to lock the apartment before he traveled with the team to New Jersey on Tuesday because he lost his key.
Because it was unlocked, a friend was checking his apartment every couple of hours while he was gone, Jones told police.
Jones’ roommates were on winter break, but none of their items appeared missing, Jones said.
The Orange begin a 3 game road trip against Rutgers this evening in Piscataway, NJ. Hopefully they can find a rhythm early and exploit Rutgers inexperienced big men. If Rutgers tries to double up down low that will leave Rautins open to drain the three ball (5 for 11 from 3-point range over his past two games). With a matchup against WVU on Saturday we are going to need all the fire power we can get! Lets consider this a warm up…I hope!
Syracuse came out slow, but was able to right the ship in the second half, finishing strong to beat Memphis by 17. Johnson put up 19 and was the Orange’s leading scorer. Both Johnson and Jackson pulled down 7 boards tonight, Arinze had 8 and Joseph led the Orange with 9. Joseph made a strong case for non-starting player of the game scoring 15 points and going 7-8 from the line.
The Orange defense stepped up in second half limiting the Tigers to just 25 points. Syracuse pulled away in the second half outscoring Memphis by 17 and never looked back.
Syracuse hosts the USF Bulls on Sunday. The games at 2pm.
This is simple. The only way Johnson will stay is if he wants too. He is easily one of the most talented players in the country. There may be different scenarios by which he may stay, a degree or just missing a title, w/e. Going in the top three depends on what teams need, but the question of is he a top three player, again, the answer is simple, hell yes he […]
